Mr. Venkatesh was distraught with Sumit. Before ten days, Sumit committed to manufacturing the unit, get it tested, and despatch it today. Accordingly, Mr. Venkatesh informed his customer through his marketing officer. Today when Mr. Venkatesh visited the factory floor, he was shocked. Sumit was on sick leave. The units were getting assembled. One of the assembly workmen told him that one part was not available. After he gets the part, the assembly of the unit can be completed in six hours. Then the team will be painted and tested. This means that the unit cannot be shipped in the next two days. Mr. Venkatesh instructed the concerned person to arrange that part urgently. He returned to his office in a dejected mood. He told his secretary to connect him to the marketing officer. Mr. Venkatesh briefed him to phone the customer and expressed his profound apology for not maintaining the set date of supply. The new date of despatch of the unit should be after three days.
Mr. Venkatesh also instructed his secretary to organize a meeting with department heads, including HR, and their immediate assistants in a conference room the next day at 1630 hrs. He would like to give a presentation on commitment.
The next day at the beginning of the meeting, Mr. Venkatesh asked, "What is meant by commitment?"
The Marketing Manager said, "Commitment could be described as an act of getting fastened yourself to a line of action."
The maintenance Manager, whose hobby is reading, quoted that "commitment is based on three features. They are bestowing the best of yourself, going for an extra mile, and not giving up the situation you find yourself in."
Production Manager uttered, "Commitment means maintaining your promise."
The finance Manager opined, "On the wider spectrum, commitment is one of the bases of integrity." He continued, "A person who is committed to his commitment earns trust and respect from his superiors, colleagues, and subordinates."
Mr. Venkatesh commented, "Such persons advance in their careers."
HR Manager put forth his views "Organizational commitment is an attachment to the company, which portrays a person's intention to continue the employment." He also described, "It is a willingness to abide by the values and goals of the company and always ready to exert additional efforts on its behalf."
Mr. Venkatesh happily said that individual tries to relate his values and goals to that of the organization's motives. This enables to form a linkage between the individual employee and the parent organization. Mr. Venkatesh quoted Abraham Lincoln, "Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality." He explained the topic elaborately as follows.
What is an organizational commitment?
Organizational commitment is stated as link or bond employees have with their employer who represents the organization. It is termed as the individual's psychological attachment to the organization.
The level of organizational commitment should be studied to judge employee engagement and satisfaction, his/her performance, and distribution of leadership.
When an employee gets a strong urge of commitment, he starts feeling that the goals of the organization are his own, and he works with his whole energy and focuses on achieving them. The organization also starts respecting such employees.
This helps to enhance engagement, productivity, quality, and overall morale, which opens chances of retention by the company for an extended period. Such experienced and committed talents are assets of any organization. It is observed that such employees having a positive attitude seldom consume their sick leaves.
